The camp is directed by Dan Spainhour. Coach Spainhour has been directing camps for over 22 years. He has received numerous awards during his coaching career, including three state championships and fourteen coach of the year honors. In 2007 he returned to high school coaching at West Stokes in King, NC. This past season Spainhour led his team to the conference tournament championship (Conference championship highlights) and was named the coach of the year marking the 15th time in his career he has received such an honor. In 2008 he led the Wildcats to the regular season conference championship for the first time in school history. (Coach Spainhour & the Wildcats after earning first place).
Coach
Spainhour is considered to be one of the top teachers of basketball
fundamentals in the country. Duke’s coach Mike Krzyzewski has this to say
about him:
"It is a privilege to endorse Dan Spainhour's coaching and teaching
ability. I have found him to not only be extremely knowledgeable about the
game but he also has an amazing way of communicating with youngsters. It
is a great combination!" Spainhour also served as Athletic Director of West Stokes High School from 1998-2003, he managed athletic teams including scheduling, budgeting, hiring of staff, travel arrangements, academic enforcement and facilities coordinator. He also organized, directed and established funding and sponsorship for the formation of a new high school athletic program. Spainhour was also the head men's basketball coach at West Stokes High School were he was named the 2001-2002 Conference Coach of the Year. He led the team to the state playoffs in the school's first year of existence, as well as the sectional semifinals in the third year. Bishop McGuinness High School is were Spainhour acquired his first high school coaching experience. He served as the head men's basketball and baseball coach. As basketball coach he was named coach of the year four times, had two state final appearances, won three conference championships, won two-consecutive tournament championships and had four consecutive 20-win seasons. As the baseball coach he won three state championships and was named coach of the year eight times. In his career he has accumulated a varsity coaching record of 246-143. Spainhour was the recipient of the Governor's Laurel Wreath Award as an Ambassador of Athletics in the State of North Carolina, was appointed to the state's agency governing private school athletics and elected to the committee which oversaw state sectional basketball tournaments in the state during his career. Spainhour earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from High Point College and his Master's Degree in sports administration from the University of Miami in 1998. |
